Glazer Family

As the Glazer family put Manchester United up for sale, the fact that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) recently announced that Liverpool FC is also up for sale could be a key component of any move.

In recent months, the American owners have come under fire for the handling of the club and they have decided that their time as stewards of the Merseyside club could soon come to an end.

They have not yet accepted a bid, but they are willing to negotiate a deal over the sale. A statement from FSG stated: “There have been a number of recent changes of ownership and rumours of changes in ownership at EPL clubs and inevitably we are asked regularly about Fenway Sports Group’s ownership in Liverpool.

“FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.”

A potential sale of Liverpool however could cause some problems for Manchester United. Of course, there is the issue that a Liverpool flushed with cash would cause issues for not only their Manchester rivals but the rest of the Premier League.

But it could also cause problems if the Glazers as they open up to potential buyers. The Glazer ownership has come under increased scrutiny as of late as a number of fan groups such as The 1958 have organised consistent protests since Norwich last season to demand that the club is sold.

Liverpool are an attractive proposition to investors and you would think that anyone interested in United would be interested in buying a club that has been more successful in the last five years, winning the Premier League and the Champions League.

Overall the only thing that United can hope for is that if Liverpool are sold, they get owners that are unwilling to invest and cause the club to go backwards as that will help on both the competitive side and also remove the possibility of a buyer who could cause problems for United.
