Joe Scally

Speaking to Bild, Joe Scally spoke on how he feels after he went from backup to starter for his club as well as his goals for the US, Borussia Mönchengladbach and himself this season.

Overall, the 19-year-old is happy to be playing as much as possible and wants to continue that as well as helping the team, whilst at the World Cup he wants to at least make it through the group stage.

Joe, at the age of 19, you already have a permanent place at Borussia and are a US national player. Are you a little surprised that everything went so fast?

“I don’t know exactly why all this went so fast for me. But of course I am happy that I was able to win the trust of both coaches – Daniel Farke at Borussia and Greg Berhalter in the national team – and that I have already been able to play so many games for Borussia. It means a lot to be called an important player for Borussia. It is one of the largest clubs in Germany to be allowed to play for this club makes me happy.”

What do you want to achieve with the USA at the World Cup? What is your minimum goal?

“With the US national team, we really want to survive the group phase. I think that you can divide the tournament into two – the group phase and the knockout round. From the round of 16 anything can happen.“

What is possible under coach Daniel Farke, what can you achieve? And what are your personal goals for the season?

“Everything is possible. Our goal as a team is to come back to Europe. Personally, I just want to play as many games as possible for Borussia and help the team as well as possible.

Scally has played 50 games for Gladbach since he joined them from New York City FC in 2021. Scally initially played understudy to Stefan Lainer, but after the Austrian got injured the American was able to make the right-back position his own and has played in all of Gladbach’s games this season.

USA start their World Cup campaign against Wales on November 21 before games against England and Iran follow on November 25 and 29.
