Ian Wright and Owen Hargreaves have praised Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez for his impact since arriving at Old Trafford.
After a shaky start to the season, Martinez soon found his feet at United and has become a key figure in the heart of their defence. He performed strongly once again on Sunday as the Reds defeated West Ham 1-0.
Marcus Rashford’s seventh goal of the campaign was the difference as Erik ten Hag’s side returned to fifth in the table. However, they had their defence to thank for ensuring the three points remained in the north west.
David de Gea produced a superb save late on to keep United ahead and the rearguard action was enough to see them over the line. Speaking post-match with Premier League Productions, Wright hailed Martinez’s performances.
“He’s got defensive quality that I haven’t seen at Manchester United for a while,” the ex-Arsenal striker said. “Not only his positioning but he passes the ball through the lines. He’s exactly what they’ve needed.
“Someone that doesn’t mess about, there’s no thrills with him it’s just bang, good challenges. He’s been a really, really good signing.
“I didn’t think he was going to be as good as he’s been.” Meanwhile, former United midfielder Hargreaves explained: “He’s added so much to the team.
“He’s given them so much. His performance in this game had a big impact on Harry Maguire as well.
“There were so many positives for United today but defensively Martinez was fantastic. Erik ten Hag will be really pleased.”
