Lisandro Martinez has quickly become a fan favourite with the Manchester United fans thanks to his gritty performances combined with his visible passion.
Many had questioned whether the Argentine would be able to succeed in the Premier League given his 5ft 9in height, but he is proving those doubters wrong. Boss Erik ten Hag hailed Martinez in his press conference ahead of FC Sheriff on Thursday.
He said: “Licha always does this [shows fight]. Every challenge, every duel he gives everything he has. The fans, they love it. You need some players in your team that express that.”
His United team-mates have also been highly complimentary of the defender. Here is everything they have said about Martinez since his summer arrival, in chronological order.
“I have a really good feeling [about Martinez and Christian Eriksen]. They’re doing great and they will help us a lot.”
“I knew Licha [Martinez] because I played against him and it’s great to get to know him properly now.”
“I’ve really enjoyed playing with him today. I think he will be a top, top player for the club, I thought he was outstanding today and I’m sure everyone is looking forwards to watching him play this year.
“I think that’s [his height] probably been talked about a little bit unfairly. I think for what he brings, his physicality, how he uses his body, his leap and what he gives you in terms of mobility.
“And on the ball and, you know what, personality wise I think he’s going to add an awful lot to the team. Even this week you can see already what he brings, he brings that larger-than-life personality at the back. Controlling.
“As I say, I think he was excellent today, I’ve really enjoyed playing with him and I look forward to playing with him hopefully a bit more this year.”
“I’m looking forward to playing with them and seeing what we can do together. They all bring something a little bit different and also off the pitch they bring something new to the dressing room.”
“The best, my brother.”
“Licha, Argentinian, crazy guy, but he’s someone that we needed. He brings a lot of strength, courage, and team spirit, playing with these guys is very nice.”
“He’s a character and a warrior out there on the pitch. He’s been performing great and it’s very important to have players like that in the squad. He’s been performing great and he did another great game today.”
“[He has been] unbelievable, to be honest. You can see everyone loves him. The fans love him. His left foot is unbelievable.
“I think it always helps when you play with a left-footer on the side because he naturally likes to come out to that side, and I think he has fitted in really well. Of course, he can keep getting better and better, but for me so far, he has been unbelievable this season.
“He needs to keep that up. His aggression, his passion, we need him in that backline. He brings that every game. I am really pleased to have him in the team.”
