Thomas Meunier has suggested that Neymar’s time at Paris Saint Germain has had a negative effect on the Brazilian.
Meunier now plays for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga but he spent three seasons playing for the Ligue 1 champions.
He discussed his time at the club in an interview with German outlet Kicker and he focused heavily on his time with Neymar. He said that the forward “lost his magic at PSG”.
The Borussia Dortmund right-back also declared himself a fan of the Brazilian striker during his time at Barcelona, but believes he was never at his best again when he left for France in 2017.
“I have to admit I was a big fan of Neymar when he was still playing for Barcelona. The comeback [6-1 against PSG] was all down to him. If I had been 10 years old, I would have had his poster in my room,” he confessed.
Meunier also spoke about his departure from the French club in 2020.
“In Paris, the sporting director at the time, Leonardo, pulled me back because he didn’t want to renew my contract. Everything happened without me, until the Champions League final where I deserved to be.”
And the sporting side transcended the family side.
“On a personal level, it wasn’t easy to leave Paris either. My wife, my children and myself, we all love the city. It was difficult to leave. But over time we managed to adapt as a family. And I think that showed on the pitch,” said the player.
