Lisandro Martinez has made it clear to Ajax that he only sees himself playing in the Premier League next season after Manchester United moved to beat Arsenal to his signature.
The Argentina centre-back is wanted by both United and Arsenal as they push to strike a deal with Ajax this week who value him at £43m.
Arsenal have had two offers rejected with their last, on Monday, coming in at £34m plus add-ons up to £38m. United have now countered with a £35.3m plus guaranteed add ons to £38m but have the added pull of coach Erik ten Hag, who struck up a strong rapport with Lisandro during his tenure with the Dutch champions.
Lisandro, who is currently on holiday in Ibiza, has told the Ajax board including Edwin van der Sar and Jan-Klaas Huntelaar, that his mind is already set after United and Arsenal both placed formal offers of £38m.
The 24-year-old has made his stance clear that, while respectful of what Ajax have done for him, he does not wish to let the opportunity of a move to the Premier League pass and staying in Amsterdam next season is not an option for him.
He has told the club that reaching an agreement soon, with either United or Arsenal, will be the most beneficial solution for all parties.
Lisandro has kept a low profile so far out of respect to Ajax and their supporters as he is a popular figure. However, at 24 he is determined to make the most of the opportunity that has arisen and wants Ajax to respect what he considers the gentleman’s agreement that was put in place when he signed a contract extension that he could leave should a big club make a substantial offer for him.
Lisandro remains appreciative of Ajax after they brought him to Europe from Defensa y Justicia in 2017 but he believes the figures put forward represent a very good financial proposal for the club and he is excited by the chance to play in the Premier League.
Lisandro has no preference as it stands whether that move is with Arsenal or United but is understood to have spoken to ten Hag and has a strong connection with the United manager after their time together.
The centre-back is a versatile footballer who can play at left-back or defensive midfield.
United are progressing with deals for Tyrell Malacia and Frenkie de Jong but hope to move players on also.
Fulham have expressed an interest in Eric Bailly and have made an £8.6m offer for Andreas Periera but the midfielder was hoping to stay with Flamengo in Brazil.
