Lisandro Martinez

Manchester United are set to offer a bid for Ajax center-back Lisandro Martinez in the coming days.

According to top-tier Dutch journalist Mike Verweij, the Red Devils wants the 24-year-old to boost their defensive line which was one of the worst in the past season.

“After not being able to sign Timber, Manchester United have switched their attention to Lisandro Martínez who Ten Hag knows for 3 years,” Verweij said.

United were interested in Timber and it had been said that a deal was in place before the talks were disarrayed by Netherlands national team head coach Louis van Gaal who threatened not to pick the player if he moved to Old Trafford.

The Telegraaf now reports that the player’s agents are in talks with Ajax concerning a new contract with Fabrizio Romano stating that the 22-year-old would make his final decision in the coming days.

The claims of Martinez are not new as David Ornstein (The Athletic) claimed that Arsenal had identified the player as their top target, and had their opening bid of €30 million rejected by the Eredivisie giants.

However, Verweij mentions that the Gunners never put in a bid for the player, and merely asked for the availability of the Argentine.
