Thiago Silva

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has aimed a subtle dig at former club, Paris Saint Germain, over their inability to win the Champions League.

The club is yet to win Europe’s biggest club prize, despite investing billions in the brightest talents across Europe over the years.

The Brazilian says ‘money cannot buy the Champions League’, and only major changes to key areas can lead them to success.

Speaking to Canal+, the 37-year-old Silva said: “The elimination was incredible, unimaginable for us who are PSG supporters.

“Every year it’s the same thing. There are things you have to look at to try to improve them in the future.

“As things are, it’s difficult to continue to progress. Every year, we [PSG] start from scratch. You can’t do that in football.

“Even if PSG have a lot of money, that’s not what makes you win in football. That’s not how we’re going to win the Champions League.”

Silva left France last season and joined Chelsea on a free transfer, and won the Champions League in his first season at the London club.

He will be in action on Wednesday night when Chelsea host Real Madrid in the quarter-final first leg.
