Kai Havertz

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has intimated that Kai Havertz would start in the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Despite playing the full 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge, the Germany international could not prevent his side from losing 4-1 to Brentford in a shock Premier League defeat.

Tuchel has Romelu Lukaku begging for more minutes on the bench, but the German claims that “beast” Havertz was his team’s best player in their thrashing from the Bees.

“I felt he was our strongest player. I think he worked like an animal and was very dangerous. I am very happy with his performance in particular,” Tuchel told reporters after the game.

Havertz started both legs of Chelsea’s last-16 triumph over Lille and headed home the first goal after only eight minutes in his side’s 2-0 victory against Les Dogues in the first meeting.

The 22-year-old has 11 goals and five assists in 36 Chelsea appearances this season, with six of those goals coming in the Premier League Рonly Mason Mount (8) has more at the club.
