Joe Gomez

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is angling at a recall to the England national team.

Gomez was one of the most trusted defenders under Gareth Southgate but an injury that saw him miss a chunk of last season and losing his place at the club has seen him miss on a national team call-up recently.

The 24-year-old has however been drafted back to the Red starting team and slots at right-back due to an injury to Trent Alexander Arnold and hopes that his return to action can earn him a place under Southgate.

“Obviously, that’s a goal of mine. (I’m) not looking too far ahead, but there’s a World Cup this year and it’s obviously a goal of mine to try to do all I can,” Gomez told the Liverpool website when asked if he is trying to get back into the England squad.

“I know the focus starts here, I can’t think about the outside and so on. All I can do is try to apply myself here and hopefully reap the rewards of that. Of course, it is an aspiration, but the main thing is applying myself at Liverpool and seeing what comes of it.”

There have been reports that the player wants to move to Fulham if they are promoted to the Premier League this season as he wants to be part of the England squad for the 2022 World Cup which is slated for Qatar later this year.
