Luis Suarez edged ahead of Argentine superstar Lionel Messi as South American World Cup qualifiers top scorer with his goal in Uruguay’s 2-0 win over Chile on Tuesday night.
The Atletico Madrid forward gave his side the lead with 10 minutes to go with an exquisite finish, which set Uruguay on their way to the World Cup.
Federico Valverde scored a second goal late on, which ensured Uruguay comfortably joined the likes of Brazil and Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.
It was Suarez’s 29th goal in the South American World Cup qualifiers, moving ahead of Messi, who has 28.
“Special night, special game, special shirt and a goal,” Suarez wrote on social media alongside a picture of him holding his shirt from the match.
“What more could I ask for in unique and unforgettable moments for my country?”
