Harry Maguire

England players Jordan Henderson and Jack Grealish have leaped into the defence of Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

Maguire who featured in England’s win over Ivory Coast on Tuesday night was booed by a section of England fans. The incident came after the same happened in their last friendly against Switzerland jeers rang around the stadium when his name was mentioned.

“Personally I think it’s ridiculous. Even tonight he was brilliant. Our first two goals, the first one him driving out with ball, the second one driving a bit and passing to Ollie. Not every center-back can have those qualities.

“He’s been a fantastic servant for his country and it’s ridiculous for him to get booed. It wasn’t something the team liked. Harry’s a strong-minded person. His performance tonight will have done him the world of good. It will only spur him on. It’s not nice to hear but you’ve got a job to do,” Grealish said after the game.

On his part, Henderson said: “I can’t get my head around what happened at Wembley tonight. Harry Maguire has been a colossus for England. Without him, the progress made at the last two tournaments would not have been possible.”

Maguire will hope that he can get a good reception when he returns to club duty with Man United who takes on Leicester City this weekend.
