Louis Van Gaal

Louis Van Gaal has warned Ajax manager Erik ten Hag against joining English side Manchester United.

Van Gaal spent two seasons at the Manchester club before being dismissed in 2016 after the club finished outside the top-four, missing out on Champions Legue football.

Ten Hag has been heavily linked with Man United, with recent reports indicating he has already been interviewed for the role.

According to Van Gaal, Ten Hag should choose a “football club and not a commercial club” when he leaves the Dutch club.

“I think Erik ten Hag is a great coach,” he said ahead of their friendly against Germany on Tuesday.

“And a great coach is always good for Manchester United. But Manchester United is a commercial club. Those are difficult choices for a coach.

“You better go to a football club. I’m not going to guide his career.

“I’m not going to advise him, he’ll call me himself. But he must choose a football club and not a commercial club.”

Ten Hag has done a wonderful job at the helm of Ajax, turning them into one of the most exciting teams in Europe.

He will however face competition for the Man United role with Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui all considered as well.

United are in search of a new manager with current interim boss Ralf Rangnick set to leave at the end of the current campaign.
