Arsenal legend Marc Overmars has been appointed as the technical director of Belgian side Royal Antwerp.
Overmars stepped down as director of football of Ajax a month ago following inappropriate behaviour towards female colleagues. The 48-year-old sent inappropriate messages and photographs to several women he worked with which led him to step down with immediate effect.
“What has happened at Ajax won’t happen again,” he said.
“I am glad to be here. It is a new chapter for me. A beautiful challenge at a club where I see potential to grow.”
Antwerp manager Sven Jaecques said he had not specifically spoken to female employees at his club about the decision to hire Overmars.
“It is important to give people new opportunities and to turn the page,” he said.
Overmars spent seven years on the board of Go Ahead Eagles after his illustrious playing career, before his appointment as Ajax’s director of football in 2012. During his near 10-year tenure in Amsterdam, he oversaw a successful strategy of promoting youth from the club’s academy, helping them to win four Eredivisie titles along the way.
