Frank Lampard

Everton manager Frank Lampard suffered a broken hand while celebrating his side’s dramatic win over Newcastle on Thursday night.

Alex Iwobi scored the winner in the ninth minute of added time to send the crowd at Goodison Park into delirium, helping them halt a four-match losing streak.

All that happened despite the hosts playing the last 20 minutes with one man less after Allan was shown a straight red card in the 83rd minute.

“I did it in celebration for the goal,” Lampard said of his hand after the match.

“I just connected with something”

He added: “I didn’t punch anything, but I realised two minutes later my hand was shaking and aching. I will take it for the three points.”

The win, Everton’s second in 13 matches, saw Lampard’s team move three points clear of the relegation zone.

Everton will hope to build on the win in the coming weeks to fly to safety, and have the advantage of matches at hand over their fellow relegation-threatened teams.

The Toffees’ next match is an FA Cup clash at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
