Ousmanne Dembele

Barcelona seem to have turned a corner in recent months, with Xavi Hernandez finally getting results after a frustrating start to life in the Catalans dugout.

In quite a long time, the team looks happy, and have a way of playing that is reminiscent of the 2009 class that swept Europe.

It’s too early to say though, but Xavi has managed to assemble a good team so far, partly thanks to a few January arrivals.

The club has made a number of poor signings over the past few seasons, but they seem to be leveling that as they go all out to snap up free agents as well as promote academy graduates.

We take a look at 10 of the most expensive club signings.

Ferran Torres, who cost the club €55m in January is on the list, which has the likes of De Jong, Coutinho, and even Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Barcelona’s most expensive signings.

  • Malcom – €41m
  • Ferran Torres – €55m
  • Miralem Pjanic – €60m
  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic – €69m
  • Luis Suarez – €81m
  • Frenkie de Jong – €86mn
  • Neymar – €88m
  • Antoine Griezmann – €120m
  • Phelipe Coutinho – €135m
  • Ousmanne Dembele – €140m

From the above list, only three players are still at the club; Torres, Frenkie de Jong, and Dembele.

Coutinho had an underwhelming time at the Catalan club after his arrival from Liverpool and was sent out on loan at Bayern, where he won the Champions League.

He returned but never nailed down a spot and was eventually allowed to leave on yet another loan deal in January, this time heading to England with Aston Villa.

A lot was expected from Antoine Griezmann when he arrived from Atletico Madrid, but just like Coutinho, he failed to live up to the demands and was allowed to return to his former club at the start of the current season.

Malcom and Pjanic are two other players the club will struggle to explain their signings.
