Danny Ward

Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward is set to miss the rest of the season after undergoing meniscus surgery.

The news will be a blow to Wales who will now be without their number one option for their all-important World Cup qualifiers, which will begin with the semi-final against Austria.

Confirming the development was Brendan Rodgers who said: “He’s had an operation on his knee to clean up his meniscus. He had that yesterday, so he’s out for a number of weeks.

“It’s something he’s tried to play through. I’ve known Danny since I’ve been here, he trains every day, he has always been there and available, and pushing Kasper. He has been a loyal and supportive number two.

“It’s really unfortunate for us and for Wales at this moment in time. He couldn’t carry on. It was a clean-up operation for him and that’s why he hasn’t been involved. It will probably be towards the end of the season (when he’s back).”

Ward has been the preferred second choice keeper at Leicester but his place will now be taken by long-time club deputy Eldin Jakupović.
