Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick explained the absence of Bruno Fernandes during the Reds’ emphatic 3-2 win over Tottenham on Saturday evening.

Rangnick made five changes to the team that started the Manchester derby last weekend, with Fernandes’ absence most notable.

Speaking before the match, the German said the midfielder is out due to illness, but was hopeful he will be available for next week’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

“Bruno is ill, unfortunately,” confirmed Ralf before the game. “He couldn’t train yesterday and is therefore not available for the game. Hopefully, he will be back for Tuesday but, today, he is out.

Rangnick further explained his team selection for the match at Old Trafford against Antonio Conte’s side.

“We wanted to play with three offensive players so that’s why I decided to play Cristiano and Marcus at the same time,” he added when asked about fielding both forwards in his line-up, alongside in-form Jadon Sancho.

Atletico are up next at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, before facing Leicester City in early April.
