FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandes has played down his burst up with his Elche counterpart Francisco Rodriguez.

The duo clashed after the full-time whistle with Barca’s assistant coach and Xavi’s brother Oscar also getting involved in a clash with Elche player Pere Milla in a game in which they won 2-1.

“It was nothing, it was the tension of the game,” Xavi said in his post-match conference. “We asked them to kick the ball out, nothing else.

“We spoke without anything more happening. Don’t make a big deal of it, they are situations that come from tension. I have maximum respect for Elche, Francisco, and Pere Milla, with whom we have friends in common and we were joking.”

His sentiments were echoed by Francisco who noted: “We have had a friendship with Xavi for years and he’s a very respectful person. We thought Jordi Alba was faking an injury to waste time and for that, we decided not to give the ball back. We can be nice but we won’t be stupid.”

The win saw Barca rise to third on the log with 48 points but are still 15 points off leaders Real Madrid who have played a game more.
