Anthony Elanga came off the bench to help Man United hold Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash played on Wednesday night.

Joao Felix struck early in the first half to give Diego Simeone’s  side a deserved lead, and for some time it seemed that it would be enough to give them victory until Elanga scored late on to force a draw.

In a cagey match that was not entirely dominated by any of the two sides, it was the hosts who got off the blocks first.

They were rewarded after just eight minutes when Renan Lodi sent a precise lofted cross into the box, finding Felix in good space near the penalty spot and the youngster headed it in off the left post.

There was little action from both sides in the remaining part of the half, even though United grew into the match and were in control going into the break.

The second half was a replica of the first, as Atletico sat deep and opted to go for counter-attacks while also exploiting the spaces on the wide areas.

With 15 minutes to go, Ralf Rangick took off Marcus Rashford for 19-year-old Elanga, and he delivered five minutes later as he scored the leveler.

Bruno Fernandes did his usual magic in the middle of the park before squaring it to Elanga, who beat Jan Oblak with a brilliant shot into the bottom left corner.

Atletico Madrid came close to snatching it with three minutes to play, but Antoine Griezmann’s effort crashed against the crossbar.

In the end, the match ended all square, leaving everything to play for in the return leg.

In another match on the night, Benfica and Ajax played out a 2-2 draw, with Sebastien Haller scoring on both ends.
