Odion Ighalo

Nigeria will miss the services of Odion Ighalo for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The eagerly-awaited tourney is set to kick off on Sunday, January 8, 2022, and will run for a month as 24 teams battle for the top prize.

Ighalo has been denied permission by his Saudi Arabian club Al Shabaab, who claimed the request to allow the striker to link up with the Super Eagles was submitted late.

Majid Al-Marzouki, an official of the club, said there is no further discussion on the matter with only two days to the big kick-off.

“The Fifa Player Status Regulations stipulates that the federation must notify the player and his club in writing of his summons 15 days before the start of the tournament, and it is advised to send a copy to the local federation of the club as well, which did not happen,” Al-Marzouki said.

“Accordingly, the coach [Pericles Chamusca] told us that the player will stay with us and will not join the Nigerian team.

He joins Victor Osimhen and Emmanuel Dennis on the list of players who will miss the tournament.

Nigeria are in Group D alongside Egypt  Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.
