There could be big, late drama ahead of AFCON. Zimbabwe are at risk of getting suspended from international football, with Zambia in pole position to step in as a replacement.
According to reports, FIFA are likely to punish Zimbabwe by suspension from all international football after it was alleged that the government in the nation has interfered with the team’s business.
Zambia are meanwhile standing by to quickly replace the Warriors of Zimbabwe should FIFA decide on the ban.
“We have followed keenly the development in Zimbabwe and have always remained open to being part of the Nations Cup if Zimbabwe is banned,” Sidney Mungala, the Zambian FA’s media officer, told BBC Sport Africa.
“Given the length of the time before the tournament kicks off, we would have hoped that this matter would have been resolved by now,” he added.
Meanwhile, the tournament will kick off this weekend in Cameroon.
