Jorginho scored a brace of penalties as Chelsea beat Aston Villa 3-1 on Boxing Day to keep the pressure on Manchester City.

Chelsea came into the game on a bac of two consecutive draws against Everton and Wolves but the good news was that the team had the duo of Romelu Lukaku and Hudson Odoi back in contention.

Things however went from bad to worse when defender Reece James flicked Matt Targett’s cross beyond his own goalkeeper to open the scoring. Matty Cash was to commit a needless foul when he lunged in on Callum Hudson-Odoi in his box a move that left the referee with no choice but to point to the spot; up stepped Jorginho to restore parity.

With the penalty being the Blue’s only shot on target in the game, coach Thomas Tuchel Tuchel threw Romelu Lukaku on with Trevoh Chalobah at the interval a move that saw Christian Pulisic moved out wide.

Lukaku was to tuck in Odi’s cross for Chelsea’s lead in the 56th minute and the Belgian was on hand again to earn his side a penalty late on after being brought down by Ezri Konsa; a move that saw Jorginho step up for his second in the afternoon and Chelsea’s third.

The Blues are currently placed third with 41 points just as Liverpool who have played a game less even though they are six points off Man City.
