Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has revealed they had a conversation with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners announced on Tuesday Aubameyang had been stripped of the captaincy and the striker will not be available for tomorrow’s game against West Ham United. Arteta addressed the media today where he talked about Arsenal’s plans of naming a new captain admitting the decision was based on Auba not fulfilling his duties.

“I don’t have much more to say. It’s a really clear statement from the club. It’s a decision we have made following the last incident with the player. This is where we stand,” said Arteta on the decision to strip of Aubameyang captaincy.

“We had a personal conversation and spoke face-to-face about it. He had to accept the decision. We have based the decision on certain moments where he has not fulfilled his duties.”

On new captain

“It is a really unpleasant situation. It is not a moment to make a rash decision [on a new captain]. The leadership group is really strong. We are going to continue like that, to make that group a little bit better, to educate them and get the right feedback.”

“We have different players who are nominated. In the last game, it was Laca and we have Granit too who has been captain, so we will follow that.”

Out of West Ham game

“He will not be involved in the squad for now. There’s been a lot to digest and it was a really difficult decision to make so we need a bit of time. Is there a way back for him? We need a little bit of time to heal.”

Dressing room reaction

“Well, they accepted the decision and I think they know because they have committed to it and they have demanded that we want to take our culture, our demands and who do we want to be as a club and how do we want to represent this football club to a different level and when those standard are not met you know that you can not participate in our daily basics.”

On Granit Xhaka

“Granit is one of the captains, part of the leadership group, and a really important player for us.”
