Sergio Aguero is set to retire from professional football on Wednesday, according to reports.

The Argentina international has not played for Barcelona since late October, when he was substituted against Alaves in La Liga due to chest pains and difficulty breathing.

Aguero was initially expected to miss three months of action while being closely monitored by medical professionals, but according to journalist Emilio Perez de Rozas, an announcement will be made on Wednesday confirming the striker’s retirement due to heart problems.

“There is a ceremony on Wednesday wherein Aguero will announce that he’s retiring from football,” De Rozas told Marca.

“It seems that it was decided a few weeks ago, as the journalist Gerard Romero had said. But Rafa Yuste (Barcelona vice-president) denied it and said there were still a couple of months left before doctors would decide.

“But, according to my information, Barcelona have prepared his farewell.”

Aguero was allegedly diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat following his withdrawal from the Alaves match on October 30.

Since his arrival at Barcelona, the 33-year-old has scored once in five appearances.
