Ansu Fati has been ruled out of Barcelona’s upcoming Champions League match against Bayern Munich due to insufficient progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Barcelona enter the game knowing that a win at the home of the German champions will almost certainly be required to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages, with Benfica capable of leapfrogging them into second place with a win over bottom side Dynamo Kyiv.
It’s an obviously massive game, and Fati had informed manager Xavi that he desired to be considered regardless of his fitness level.
There was some hope that Fati would make it back in time for the game, but AS reports that the decision has been made to leave the winger at home.
Despite Fati’s resolve, Barcelona have always been adamant that he would not be rushed back until he was 100 percent fit. The 19-year-old was sidelined for nearly a year due to a nasty knee injury and has battled minor setbacks since his September return, and there are already concerns that his body may be struggling to cope with the workload following such a lengthy absence.
Barcelona were prepared to allow Fati to return to team training on Friday, but his fitness levels were insufficient, and his return was delayed until Sunday, but has now been postponed indefinitely as Fati continues to recover.
There is no indication that his recovery has slowed or that his injury has become more severe. His return against Bayern was more fantasy than reality, and Fati has simply been ruled ineligible to play on Wednesday.
Rather than that, the December 18 meeting with Elche has been identified as a likely target for Fati’s return.
