Mikel Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has played down his spat with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp during their loss at Anfield on Saturday.

Klopp and Arteta had to be held back by their respective staff as temperatures bouled on the touchline where the German claimed that Arteta tried to influence the referee to send off Sadio Mane.

“He (Klopp) was trying to defend his side, I was trying to defend mine, and that’s it. I think the atmosphere was incredible right from the beginning. It was just an action (by Mane), and I try to defend my players and that’s what I did,” Arteta said after the game.

Arteta however admitted that they were overplayed by their hosts and lost the game in the second half after a good first-half display.

“We competed really well in the first half, they had their moments and we had our moments, we were really compact and used the ball in the right way. Then we conceded a goal from a set play.

“In the second half, when needed some momentum we just threw it away in the first 15-20 minutes. We gave every goal away in very dangerous areas, we had no pressure. They punished us. Then they had all the momentum,” he added.

Arsenal will be hoping for a change of fortunes when they host Newcastle United at the Emirates in their next game.
