Andre Ayew scored the only goal of the match as Ghana beat South Africa 1-0 to book progress to the play-off round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
With both teams finishing on 13 points each, it came down to the finest of margins, with the Black Stars going through thanks to their goals scored, 7, against Bafana Bafana‘s 6.
Ghana went into the match knowing nothing short of a win would guarantee them a place in the next round, and they threatened from early on.
The elusive goal finally arrived in the 31st minute when Ayew slotted from the spot after Daniel Amartey was fouled inside the box.
Despite South Africa being the better side in the second half, Ghana held on to ensure they booked a place in the next phase.
Elsewhere, the already qualified Senegal ensured they finished the qualifiers unbeaten after they ran 2-0 winners over Congo.
Watford FC striker Ismaila Sarr scored the two goals, starting with a 14th minute ferocious strike.
He then tapped home his and Senegal’s second 10 minutes later to see them finish the group round with 16 points, their only blemish being last week’s draw with Togo.
In another match, DR Congo booked their place in the next round courtesy of a 2-0 win over Benin.
Dieumerci Mbokani converted from the penalty spot after just 10 minutes, after he was pulled back inside the area.
