Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has distanced himself from reports linking him with Barcelona’s return following the sacking of Ronald Koeman.

Koeman was shown the door on Wednesday after Barcelona suffered a 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano. The 58-year-old was under pressure following Barca’s poor start to the current campaign and his stay at the Nou Camp came to an end after just 14 months in charge.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Arteta was asked about the possibility of returning to Nou Camp and said he is only focused on Arsenal. The Spaniard started his career at Barca and had been linked with a return earlier this year.

“I’m extremely happy at Arsenal. I feel privileged to be here and my only focus is here,” he responded when asked if he was interested in returning to the Catalans.

On Barcelona struggles

“There’s been a lot going on there over the last few years. Covid affected the club and you have to overcome a situation like the departure of Messi who has been the key player for many, many years.”

“All of that takes time. I just hope that everything works out well for the club.”

The Catalans appointed Sergi Barjuan as the caretaker boss as they continue with the hunt for a permanent manager. Xavi remains the favorite to take over at Barcelona with the likes of Erik Ten Hag and Roberto Martinez still linked with the vacant position.

The Spanish giants are currently ninth on the log, six points adrift of the top.
