Ansu Fati

Sergio Aguero has suggested Ansu Fati might be a once in a generation talent that Barcelona need to nurture if he is to reach his potential.

The former Manchester City striker came to play alongside Lionel Messi but with his Argentine team-mate gone it was 18-year-old Fati he was asked about before his Barca debut in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Asked about not taking the No 10 which Fati now wears he said: ‘The 10 fits Ansu nicely. He’s playing well and he has a very special talent. He is young and they have to let him grow.

‘We have to support him and make sure that he is comfortable on the pitch. He is one of those players that does not come around very often.’

Aguero called Barcelona’s Champions League game against Dynamo Kyiv a must-win match after their two opening defeats and said he was ready to play his part although not from the start.

‘We have to win there is not alternative because if we don’t we practically out.’

Those sentiments were echoed by Ronald Koeman who said: ‘We are playing for our future in the Champions League. This is a decisive game.’

The Barcelona coach played down his team’s chances of winning the competition but said it was vital that they emerged from their group.

‘We can’t be expected to win the Champions League because of our strength in comparison with other teams. But we do have the team to compete.

‘The path to follow is the way we played on Sunday especially in the first half. We have to be aggressive.’

Koeman said Philippe Coutinho would be an important player in the next few games after his substitute’s performance at the weekend saw him score his first goal for almost a year.

Asked about Fati’s role he said it was ‘impossible’ for him to play 90 minutes in all three of Barcelona’s games this week.

The desire to protect Fati will make for more minutes for Aguero and the former Manchester City forward said he was surprised by the way supporters received him on his debut at the weekend.

Aguero said: ‘I had only ever played against Barcelona and the stadium does impose itself. Now they are on my side. I did not expect the reception I got the other day and I just want to pay them back.’

Asked about joining Barcelona to play alongside his pal Messi who then moved to Paris, Aguero added: ‘It caught us by surprise but I want to move forward. I’m pleased as his friend that it’s going well. I want him to be enjoying his football.’
