Sadio Mane joins Koulibaly in expressing outrage for compatriot
Earlier today, news broke of Kalidou Koulibaly’s outrage that Edouard Mendy was not nominated for the Ballon D’or.
Speaking after Senegal’s clash with Namibia, the Napoli defender, and fellow Senegalese player, said:
Now Sadio Mane has joined his national teammate in lamenting Mendy’s omission, with the Liverpool forward saying:
“It’s inadmissible. I don’t understand it. It’s regrettable”.
Five Chelsea players nominated but not Mendy
It is easy to see why Mane and Koulibaly are upset. Despite his stellar campaign, Mendy’s name was nowhere to be seen when the nominations for the Ballon D’or were announced last week. While 5 of his club-mates were on the list, the Goalkeeper was conspicuously absent, even though he made some brilliant saves to keep his side in the competition before the final
Mendy himself seemed far less perturbed, saying:
“As I’ve said, I’m honestly already very proud to represent my country among the 10 best goalkeepers in the world. In a year, it’s already a very good thing. I’m not resting on my laurels, I have a lot of ambitions, but it’s already a good step.
“Then, there will always be debates, whether it be about me or someone else. It’s simply the journalists’ freedom of vote and their freedom of expression and you have to respect that”.
Having been named FIFA goalkeeper of the year, it was expected that Mendy would be included on the nominees. Is it a massive oversight for him not to be?
