Paris Saint-Germain are perhaps Europe’s most-talked about team this season, with their summer signings attracting an even higher level media attention from fans and media alike, but one of those new arrivals who has yet to feature in a single game is Sergio Ramos, with head coach Mauricio Pochettino hinting that former glories offer no guarantees.
Ramos has sttruggled with injury since arriving in Paris and is yet to even join his teammates in full training sessions, understandably drawing questions but the Argentine coach has said that the most important thing is the players’ performance levels now, not what they have won before.
“Maybe Sergio Ramos’ situation is different to what it was in 2014, or to [Lionel] Messi’s or Neymar’s. These players are great champions, but they need to adapt to the reality,” Pochettino told ‘Universo Valdano’ on Movistar+.
“We all have in our head that we’re the best, but they need to be at that level. If they get that label back, of course we can achieve anything.
“But the fight begins with getting the best out of every individual. The orchestra needs to be in tune.”
One of PSG’s stars who has been on form this season but whose days in France might be numbered is Kylian Mbappe, but Pochettino thinks the young forward is calm and focused.
“I think the club was strong. The idea was for him to stay with us and Mbappe seems calm,” said Pochettino.
“He’s a great professional and he has respected his contractual situation. He’s an intelligent lad, young but mature.
“As a footballer he’s extraordinary. A world champion. He’s the present and the future.”
The former Spurs head coach also spoke about the unexpected bonus of having Messi in his squad this year and he has been delighted with his compatriot so far.
“He’s probably the best of all time. Having Leo is an absolute gift. No one expected his end at Barcelona, not even him,” said Pochettino.
“The president, Leonardo and the club in general did a great job in signing Messi. It created a lot of expectation in Paris and the world over.
“I like how genuine he is and how he feels he needs to pay back all the love he has received.”
