Villarreal defender Pau Torres has confirmed he turned down the advances of Tottenham this summer.
Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo was keen to bring in a new defender following the departure of Toby Alderweireld and Juan Foyth who left on permanent moves. Spurs were keen to bolster their defence and identified Torres but the Spaniard wasn’t interested in a move to the north London side as he wanted to remain at Villarreal.
“I was told there was interest in me from another club, which was Tottenham,” the 24-year-old said.
“However, I was very clear in what I wanted to do. I took the decision [to stay at Villarreal] calmly.
“It was the best decision for me and what I wanted to do; staying with my boyhood club and with an exciting season ahead with big goals and big challenges to achieve. I was very clear, so it didn’t take much time to make the decision.”
Spurs had a busy summer transfer window, as they brought in five new faces, spending around £60million in the process.
Torres’ contract with Villarreal is set to expire in the summer of 2024.
