Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has explained why he omitted Taiwo Awoniyi from the squad ahead of the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Awoniyi has been in fine form for Union Berlin, netting five goals in six appearances in the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal. However, Rohr opted against selecting the player and stuck with Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu along with Terem Moffi who plays for Lorient.

“There are people calling for Awoniyi and for other players. We can only invite three strikers, so we already have Osimhen, Paul Onuachu, and Terem Moffi,” he said on Thursday.

“Kelechi Iheanacho is also available, which makes it difficult for Awoniyi. He’s a good player, he will surely get his chance,” he added.

The Super Eagles will take on Liberia on Friday before facing Cape Verde.
