Salah and Sadio Mané

Liverpool winger Sadio Mane has set himself a lofty objective of 30 goals this season as he attempts to rebound from a dismal season last year.

Since his arrival five years ago, the Senegalese forward has been a key part of Liverpool’s recent success, having helped the club win the Premier League and the Champions League.

Last season, though, his form slipped, with 16 goals in 48 games as Liverpool labored to third place after an injury-plagued campaign, and the 29-year-old acknowledges that his form last season disappointed him, but he is now hoping to get back to his former self as he seeks more glory with the Reds this season.

Speaking of his ambitions for the season, Mane told Liverpool’s official matchday program via Goal: ‘I want to score goals, and set up team-mates, even to score 30 goals.

‘Why not? The more the better as far as I’m concerned and my ambition for the team is to win trophies. Everybody is hungry for that.

Why Liverpool didn’t sign anyone on deadline day

‘I was so disappointed with last season, and passionately so, as I thought I could have done more. Whereas I might have been scoring between 18 and 22 goals a season, then on that occasion it was no longer the case so, of course, I was going to be disappointed.’

Mane has only scored one goal so far, but he has looked as threatening as ever, and he understands that past success is no guarantee of future success.

He said: ‘In football, things move on very quickly and people forget the past. It’s a shame, but that’s how it is. People aren’t always talking about what we have won up to today, and there’s no excuse for relaxing in pursuit of our goals.’

Since joining the club in 2016, Mane has established himself as one of the top forwards in the world, scoring 98 goals in 221 appearances while winning the Premier League and Champions League.

After the international break, Liverpool will travel to Elland Road to face Leeds in a bid to win the Premier League this season.
