Liverpool aimed to take the option of extending the contract of defender Dejan Lovren by another year and holding him until summer 2022.
The Reds can prolong the club’s stay with Croatia international if he is already in Anfield at the close of the summer transfer window.
Russian team Zenit St. Petersburg is involved in Lovren but still has to contact the Reds.
The 31-year-old joined Liverpool from Southampton for £20m in July 2014.
Dejan Lovren helped the club win the Premier League title this year, making 10 starts in the top flight during the campaign.
He has made 131 league appearances for Liverpool overall, scoring five times, and also played with the club in the 2019 Champions League.
Zenit and other clubs are thought to have believed Lovren’s deal ran out in summer 2021 but the option of a further year on his contract means Liverpool may be able to command a bigger fee for him.
